Marking a significant milestone in Casey McQuillen's career, ‘Talk In My Head’ celebrates her transition from indie darling to arena sensation in under two years.
From Self-Doubt to Self-Assurance: Saying Goodbye to Imposter Syndrome
While Casey certainly leads the charge with her immensely impressive vocals, so much of the heart of this album comes from its vivid and imagery-filled lyricism… From a sonic perspective, it’s also such a fantastic blend of style and genre from start to finish… With a voice, cadence, and emanating positivity that she exudes, Casey McQuillen is undoubtedly an artist to keep your eyes on in the coming years. Enjoy!
First up is American Idol star Casey McQuillen who has enough energy alone to jump start any frailty felt in the front 20 rows, boy can she talk, and an ever more impressive singing voice too… She played some heartfelt country styled modern ballads, just her and a guitar Skinny being quite a sensitive and empowering tune. Then at the end she pulls out a Gibson SG and rocks a superb version of Etta James At Last, hitting every note perfectly, what a great start to the night.
American Idol star, activist and singer-songwriter Casey McQuillen has released her debut album, Skinny, available today on all major music platforms to coincide with the start of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Casey is currently on tour with UK singer James Morrison and says that she has been getting positive feedback from audiences who connect with her message from the song.
The buoyant crowd were treated to two excellent, yet diversely different support acts in the relatively unknown but very talented American singer songwriter Casey McQuillen and veteran of the stage, Newton Faulkner. Both had an endearing charm, wit and charisma which kept the audience captivated.
How would you describe your sound?
A) I like to think of my music as “story-teller pop.” My songs tend to tell a story as the character grows and learns throughout the song. When I was younger I associated that kind of writing with country and folk music and so I produced my tracks that way. But listening to artists like Lauv, Julia Michaels and Taylor Swift’s 1989 album, I realized that I can make pop songs that tell a story!
“That’s why I don’t write for other people. I write for myself. It’s like the value for me is like, like, ‘see me. See me, who I am not how I look, not how you think of me, not what my Instagram is, see what I am. And do with it what you will, but you will see how I actually am.’ And so for me, creativity, and the reason why I do it is it’s just a continuous assertion that I exist.”

Since American Idol’s first inception in 2002, no one could have guessed how popular the show would be and how many new musicians would gain popularity through the years, including Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson. Casey McQuillen performed on the show in season 13 and became a top 48 musician. Since then she’s done an anti-bullying concert series, and was interviewed by Kelly Clarkson, as well as released a lot of great music. I had the pleasure of interviewing McQuillen on her life and career up to this point…
